Testing the new Custom Dimension API in Minecraft Bedrock 26.20.26/27

What is currently known about the Custom Dimension API in version 26.20.26, or the more recent 26.20.28 with a couple of hotfixes? The Custom Dimension API was only recently released, but it’s a major expansion of the capabilities of mods and packs in general.

With it, you can create a separate dimension folder in behavior packs and add your own dimension files there. In fact, there have been hints of this for a long time specifically, the inter-dimension teleportation command appeared in earlier versions of Bedrock.

Why vanilla gets boring so fast

If you only play the standard Minecraft: Bedrock 26, everything starts to feel repetitive over time. Even the Nether becomes predictable because biomes like Crimson no longer spark intrest, but at the same time, you can’t create new Nether biomes you can only slightly modify existing ones. That’s exactly why custom dimensions in Minecraft Bedrock 26.20.26/27 offer much more freedom, and if you’re into creating mods, this is definetly a big plus for you.

Pale Forest Dimension as an example of a new dimension

The first mod featuring a new dimension has appeared: Pale Forest Dimension, which you can download at the very end of this article. It is built on the new custom dimension code and uses its own biomes. It generates infinite chunks, and the world itself is created via the Script API without using behavior packs or structures.

New possibilities for developers

In these dimensions, you can customize mob spawning, including rare events and mob spawns. Essentially, you can now create unique locations with their own rules, atmosphere and mechanics.

Custom dimensions are separate files created based on existing ones and run parallel to the Overworld and the Nether. You can create multiple dimensions, add your own effects, fog, and other parameters to them without being tied to the standard world.

What’s next, possibly in MCPE 26.40

The technology is still new, and it will take time to fully master it. But even now you can use it to create unique worlds, such as your own versions of Twilight Forest or other large-scale projects for Minecraft Bedrock.
